Stracathro & Inchbare Community SCIO

A Place to Connect.
A Community to Belong To.

Welcome to Stracathro & Inchbare Community SCIO

We are a local Scottish charity based in rural Angus, working to bring people together, reduce isolation and support wellbeing in the heart of our community.

Following the proposed closure of the former village hall, we reimagined what a contemporary rural community hub could be. It was decided to transform Stracathro Kirk into a welcoming, flexible space where people of all ages can connect, move, reflect, volunteer and feel part of something. This redevelopment of the Kirk is currently the main focus of our charity.

Going forward, we aspire to host a wide range of events and activities. Whether it is weekly fitness classes, community events, heritage projects or wellbeing sessions, our aim is to make sure everyone in our area, especially older adults and families, has a place to go and somewhere to belong to.

What We’re Creating Together

We are working to create a community space that supports wellbeing, connection and belonging for Stracathro, Inchbare and the surrounding area. Our work focuses on:

A Warm, Inclusive Community Hub

A welcoming, flexible space where local people of all ages can come together, connect, and feel part of the community.

Supporting Wellbeing for All

Activities and sessions that support physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, helping people stay active, connected and supported.

Volunteering & Shared Purpose

Opportunities for local people to volunteer, share skills and contribute to something meaningful within their community.

A Place Steeped
in History

Stracathro holds a remarkable place in Scottish history. In 1296, it was here that King John Balliol publicly abdicated his throne to Edward I of England, marking the beginning of the First War of Scottish Independence.

The area has deep Roman roots, with evidence of a former Roman barracks and artefacts found locally. These layers of history show that Stracathro has been a place of gathering and community for centuries.

We see this heritage not as something of the past, but as a living story that continues through the people who use and care for this space today.

Transforming Stracathro Kirk into a Welcoming Wellbeing Hub

Our Current Focus

Our main priority is the renovation and transformation of the former Stracathro Kirk into a multi-use wellbeing hub. The space will be warm, energy efficient and flexible enough to host everything from yoga and fitness sessions to community cafés, memory groups, events and quiet reflection.

Alongside this, we are hoping to develop projects such as the community garden, creating outdoor spaces that encourage connection, movement and shared ownership.

We are currently fundraising to support these improvements, and every contribution helps bring this vision closer to reality.
